Settings

Published Updated

Settings, under Administration, has three tabs. General holds what the tenant decides about its own site. Limits and retention holds the values the operator sets for every tenant, which a tenant may change within bounds. Reader icons holds what readers can show as their icon, and the icons the tenant offers them to pick from.

Each card on these tabs has its own save button and saves only its own fields, so save one card before you move on to the next. Every member of the staff can open Settings, but only a Tenant admin can save it. An Editor or an Auditor sees each card with "Only a tenant administrator can change this setting. You have read-only access."

The Public site display card as an Editor sees it: its fields and Save the settings turned off, and the notice that only a tenant administrator can change the setting.

General

Public site display

Three pieces of copy, each of which may be left empty:

  • Copyright notice: shown at the foot of every page of the site, and of its sign-in screens.
  • Site tagline: a short line shown on the sign-in, sign-up, and password screens.
  • Site description: shown in the site's footer, and given to search engines and link previews as the site's description.

Each language the site offers, as chosen under Languages, has a tab under Languages with its own three pieces of copy. The card opens on the default language's tab, and a language with no copy of its own is marked (not added). Save the settings saves the three fields of the open tab, and leaves the other languages' copy as it is. Save before you switch tabs: an edit that was not saved is not kept. Emptying all three fields and saving removes the language's copy.

The site shows a reader the copy of the language they read it in, and the default language's copy where that language has none. A language with copy of its own is shown only that copy: a field left empty on its tab stays empty there, rather than showing the default language's.

The General tab of Settings: the Public site display card with a tab for each language the site offers, the English one open, Copyright notice, Site tagline, Site description, and Save the settings.

Time zone

Time zone is the zone every date and time is shown and entered in, both in the console and on the public site. A publication time entered on a series or an episode is read in it, and so is the time a banner stops, and the days the reports and the audit log are counted by. It also decides where one month's sales end and the next month's begin for royalties, and the calendar day a reader's age is counted on. Type a city or a region to narrow the list, and choose Save the time zone.

The Time zone card: the Time zone field and Save the time zone.

Set it before the first sales: changing it later moves where the open month is cut, while a month already closed for royalties keeps the time zone it was cut in.

A new tenant starts on the platform's default time zone, which is UTC unless the operator chose another.

Languages

Languages decides which languages the site offers its readers, and which of them it starts in.

Languages offered has a box for each language Publira is translated into: 日本語, English, 한국어, 简体中文, and 繁體中文. Tick the ones readers can use the site in. Switching a language off hides the page translations written in it, without deleting them, and they come back when the language is switched on again, as Translations describes.

Readers see the ticked languages alone. The site's Language menu lists them, and so do the sitemap and the language links search engines read. An address in a language that is switched off, from a bookmark or a search result, opens the same page in the default language instead.

The tenant's app follows the same choice. It has no Language menu and reads the languages set on the reader's device instead: it opens in the first of them the site offers, and in the default language when the site offers none of them.

Default language is the language the site and this console start in for someone who has not chosen one. A reader or a member of staff who has already chosen a language keeps it. The default language is also:

  • the language of the mail the tenant sends, invitations to new staff included;
  • the language a new page is first written in.

The default language is always offered: its box stays ticked and cannot be cleared, and choosing a language that is not ticked as the default ticks it. The operator chose the default when creating the tenant, and a new tenant offers that language alone unless the operator chose more. Save the languages saves both.

The Languages card: the Default language field, a box for each language under Languages offered with the default's ticked and turned off, and Save the languages.

Reader comments

How comments are published decides whether readers can comment on episodes, and when others see a comment:

ChoiceWhat it does
Do not accept commentsEpisode pages show no comment section, and no comment can be posted. A new tenant starts here
Publish straight awayA comment is readable by everyone from the moment it is posted
Publish after approvalOnly its commenter sees a comment until a moderator approves it under Comments, as Working the approval queue describes

Reports that remove a comment is how many different readers must report a comment before it is hidden without waiting for staff. A hidden comment waits in the report queue under Comments, its commenter still sees it, and staff can put it back. It starts at 3; 0 leaves every removal to your moderators.

A series can set its own Comments choice on its form, which then applies to that series instead of this one. A series left on Follow the tenant setting follows any later change here. Choose Save the comment settings to save.

The Reader comments card: How comments are published, Reports that remove a comment set to 3, and Save the comment settings.

Age verification

Every series has an Age rating: All ages, R15, or R18. Ratings that need a proven age decides how strictly the site holds a reader to it:

ChoiceR15 seriesR18 series
Check no agesThe reader confirms they are 15 or olderThe reader confirms they are 18 or older
Check R18 onlyThe reader confirms they are 15 or olderOpen only to a reader whose date of birth shows they are 18 or older
Check R15 and R18Open only to a reader whose date of birth shows they are 15 or olderOpen only to a reader whose date of birth shows they are 18 or older

A new tenant starts on Check no ages. A series rated All ages is never gated.

To "confirm", a reader presses I am 15 or older or I am 18 or older, and the browser remembers it for the site. To "prove" an age, a reader signs in and has a date of birth saved on their account. A reader can give it when signing up or later in their settings, and cannot change it once it is saved. A reader without a date of birth is offered Add your date of birth, and one who is too young is told the work is not available for their age. A reader whose date of birth was entered wrongly contacts the site, and a Tenant admin corrects it from the reader's page under Readers.

Choose Save the age verification to save.

The Age verification card: Ratings that need a proven age and Save the age verification.

Terms and privacy policy

Terms of service and Privacy policy each name one of the tenant's published pages. The site and the app link to them, and a reader agrees to them when creating an account, and again when a new version of either asks readers to agree to it, as Publishing a new version describes. Write and publish the pages first, as Pages describes, then choose them here and choose Save the terms and privacy policy. None leaves either one unset.

The Terms and privacy policy card: a Terms of service and a Privacy policy field, each naming one of the tenant's pages, and Save the terms and privacy policy.

If a page chosen here is later taken off the site, the card says that nothing links to it any more, and sign-up stops asking readers to agree to it. Publish it again, or choose another page.

Refused email addresses

Addresses that readers cannot sign up with or change their email address to. A reader who tries one is told "This site does not accept this email address. Use another email address."

  • Refuse disposable email domains refuses the domains of throwaway mail services, from a list the platform keeps. If the operator has set no list, the switch says it has no effect.
  • Addresses and domains to refuse takes one entry per field, up to 1000. An entry with @ is one address, and also refuses that address with a +tag added. Any other entry is a domain, such as example.net, and also refuses its subdomains. Pasting several lines into a field adds a field for each line. There are no wildcards.

Choose Save the refused email addresses to save. The list applies to the next sign-up or address change. Readers already signed up with a refused address keep their accounts.

The Refused email addresses card: Refuse disposable email domains, a field for an address or a domain with Add an address or domain, and Save the refused email addresses.

Sign-in with Apple or Google is never refused here, since the provider supplies the address. Only a Tenant admin can see this card's contents.

Crawler exclusions

What the site's robots.txt asks crawlers to stay away from. A crawler that follows robots.txt stops fetching what is excluded here. Nothing is hidden from readers, and a crawler that ignores the file can still fetch every page, so this is not a way to keep a page private.

  • Crawlers kept off the whole site lists the crawlers Publira knows, grouped by what they fetch pages for: AI training, AI assistants, and Image search. Each one is named by the token its operator documents for robots.txt, with the operator under it. A ticked crawler is asked not to fetch any page of the site. The list is fixed by Publira; a crawler that is not on it cannot be added.
  • Paths kept from every crawler takes one path per field, up to 100, such as /drafts. A path starts with / and also covers everything under it. Pasting several lines into a field adds a field for each line. There are no wildcards, and a path cannot hold spaces, *, $, ?, or #. /robots.txt, /sitemap.xml, and /sitemap cannot be excluded, since crawlers need them to read the site.

Choose Save the crawler exclusions to save. Each path is saved without a trailing /, and the list is shown in alphabetical order.

The Crawler exclusions card: Crawlers kept off the whole site with a box for each crawler under AI training, AI assistants, and Image search, a field for a path with Add a path, and Save the crawler exclusions.

Saves are recorded in the audit log as Crawler exclusions updated.

Limits and retention

Limits and retention holds two forms:

  • Community limits: how often one reader may post or report comments, rate episodes, write through the contact form, save their viewer's layout, and save their notification settings, and how long a reader is refused when posting the same comment again.
  • Retention periods: how long withdrawn comments, content events, and daily and weekly ranking snapshots are kept before they are deleted.

Each group on these forms starts with Use the platform default ticked, and shows the operator's value beside it. A tenant on the default follows the operator's later changes. To set the tenant's own value, clear the box, enter the value, and save the form with Save the community limits or Save the retention periods. To return to the platform's value, tick the box again and save.

The Community limits form: each limit with Use the platform default ticked and the platform's limit under it, and Save the community limits.

The Retention periods form: each period with Use the platform default ticked and the days kept, and Save the retention periods.

  • A community limit can only be made stricter than the platform's: a lower count, or a longer duplicate comment window. A looser value is refused with a message that names the setting. If the operator later tightens the platform's limit below the tenant's, the platform's applies.
  • A retention period can be longer or shorter than the platform's default, from 1 to 36500 days. Content events start at 30 days instead, and a shorter period is refused: the site's recommendations are built from the last 28 whole days of them.

If someone else saved the same form after you opened it, your save is refused with "These settings were changed elsewhere while this page was open. Reload the page and enter the change again."

What each limit and record is, and what each purge leaves in place, is explained from the operator's side in Platform defaults and policies. Saves on this tab are recorded in the audit log as Community limits updated and Retention periods updated.

Reader icons

Reader icon policy

What readers can show decides what a reader can show as the icon beside their name, on their comments and on their account:

ChoiceWhat it does
Upload their own imageA reader uploads an image of their choice. A new tenant starts here
Choose a preset iconA reader picks one of the icons under Preset icons, and cannot upload an image
No iconsNo reader shows an icon, and the site shows a plain outline for everyone

Choose Save the reader icon policy to save. Saving Choose a preset icon or No icons takes down the icons that choice does not allow, so the console asks first with "Remove readers' icons?":

  • Choose a preset icon removes every image readers uploaded. Readers who chose a preset keep it.
  • No icons removes every icon readers show.

Choose Save and remove to go ahead. The console asks whichever policy the card shows as saved, since another Tenant admin may have changed it since the page was opened. A removed icon cannot be restored, so when the policy allows icons again, each reader chooses one again. Upload their own image removes nothing, and is saved without asking.

The Reader icon policy card: What readers can show with Upload their own image, Choose a preset icon, and No icons, and Save the reader icon policy.

Preset icons

The icons readers pick from under Choose a preset icon, up to 50. Presets can be added under any policy, so fill the set before switching to that policy: while it is empty, readers have nothing to pick.

To add one, choose a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image of 10MB or smaller under Icon image, and choose Add the icon. A square is cut from the centre of the image, and it has to be at least 128 × 128 px. Each preset is shown as the site draws an icon, with the size it is stored at.

To delete one, choose Delete under it and confirm with Delete. Readers who chose it are left without an icon, and show the plain outline until they choose another.

The Preset icons card of a tenant that has none yet: No preset icons yet, the Icon image field, and Add the icon.

Saves on this tab are recorded in the audit log as Reader icon policy updated, Reader icon preset added, and Reader icon preset deleted.
